Google Map Pack: 9 Easy Fixes to Get Your Business In

The Google map pack is the box of three businesses with a map that appears above the normal results when someone searches for a local service. For most trades it’s where a big share of the calls come from, because people tap “Call” straight from it without visiting a website.

Getting in is mostly about your Google Business Profile, and how well it matches your website. These are the nine fixes I make first for every local client.

How the Google map pack picks businesses

Google weighs three things: how relevant your profile is to the search, how far you are from the person searching, and how prominent your business is (reviews, links, mentions, a strong website). You can’t change distance. You can change everything else.

1. Pick the right primary category

Your primary category matters more than almost anything else on the profile. Choose the one that matches what people actually search for, not the broadest one. Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.

2. Use your real business name

Don’t stuff keywords into the name. It breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Use the name on your signage, van and paperwork.

3. Set your service areas properly

If you travel to customers, set service areas to the towns you really cover. Then make sure your website has a proper page for those towns. The profile and the site should tell the same story.

4. Fill in every service

Add each service with a short description. It’s free relevance, and most of your competitors leave it blank.

5. Add real photos every month

Finished jobs, your van, your team at work. Real photos, not stock. Adding a few each month keeps the profile active and gives people a reason to choose you.

6. Get reviews that mention the job and the town

Ask every happy customer for a review, and ask them to mention the job and where it was. “Brilliant job on our garden office in Heswall” helps you far more than “Great service”.

7. Reply to every review

Thank people for the good ones. Answer the bad ones calmly and briefly. Future customers read your replies before they call.

8. Post a weekly update

A short post about a recent job, with a photo and a link to the matching page on your site, keeps the profile fresh and sends people to your website.

For a Buckinghamshire commercial cleaning company, weekly posts plus a tidy profile helped lift website clicks from their Google Business Profile by 69% in one month, from 35 to 59. Total enquiry actions rose 45% in the same month.

9. Link to the right page

Link the profile to your homepage or main service page, and make sure that page loads fast and makes calling easy. Sending map pack visitors to a slow, vague page wastes the click.

Google map pack mistakes to avoid

  • Keyword stuffing the name. “Smith Plumbing Tring Boiler Repair” breaks the guidelines and risks suspension.
  • Buying reviews or reviewing yourself. Google removes fake reviews and can penalise the profile.
  • Leaving the profile alone for months. An inactive profile looks like an inactive business.
  • Different details everywhere. If your phone number or address differs between Google, your website and directories, fix it.

Does this get you into the Google map pack?

For one Wirral garden room company, getting the profile and their location pages working together put them at the top of the map pack for Heswall, Bromborough and Merseyside.

Map pack positions move with distance, so you won’t be top everywhere. But you can be top where it matters most to you.

FAQ

How long does it take to get into the Google map pack?
Quick fixes like categories and services can help within weeks. Reviews, photos and matching location pages build over a few months.

Can I rank in the map pack without an office in that town?
Distance matters, so it’s harder, but a service area business with strong reviews and a proper page for that town can still show up.

Do Google Business posts help?
They keep the profile active and send people to your site. Treat them as a weekly habit, not a magic switch.
