Local SEO Hertfordshire: 5 Smart Moves for Trades in 2026

Local SEO in Hertfordshire has a quirk that catches a lot of trades out: the towns are close together. Tring, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley, and just over the border Aylesbury, Wendover, Chesham and Amersham. They’re a few miles apart, but in Google’s eyes they’re separate markets. Saying “we cover Hertfordshire” doesn’t get you found in any of them.

I’m based near Tring and work with trades and service businesses round here and across the UK. These are the five moves I’d make first.

Why local SEO in Hertfordshire is about towns, not the county

People don’t search “plumber Hertfordshire”. They search “plumber Berkhamsted” or “plumber near me” while standing in Berkhamsted. Google answers with businesses close to them that clearly serve that town. If your website and profile only talk about the county, you’re competing with everyone and matching no one.

Move 1: build a proper page for each town you want

Pick the towns you genuinely want work from. Build one page for each with real jobs from that town, photos, the services people there book most, and a clear quote button.

Each page needs to be genuinely different. Google treats near identical town pages as doorway pages. For a Wirral garden room company, properly built town pages took them to position 1 in Bebington and Prenton.

Move 2: get your Google Business Profile right

Pick the most specific primary category, set your service areas to the towns you actually cover, fill in every service and add real photos monthly. Make sure the towns on your profile match the town pages on your site.

Move 3: collect reviews that mention the town

“Fitted a new boiler in Northchurch, really tidy job” tells Google exactly where you work. Ask customers to mention the job and the town. It’s free and it adds up fast.

Move 4: get listed where locals look

Make sure your business name, address and phone number are identical everywhere: your website, Google, Facebook, Checkatrade or Trustatrader, Yell, local directories and any trade body listings. Mismatched details confuse Google about who you are.

Move 5: post about local jobs every week

A weekly Google Business post and a monthly blog post about a real local job keep you visible and give Google fresh, local signals. “Garden clearance in Wigginton: before and after” is far more useful than “Spring offers”.

Mistakes that hold Hertfordshire trades back

Listing every town in the footer. A long block of town names doesn’t help you rank and Google’s guidelines treat it as keyword stuffing. Build proper pages instead.

Using a virtual office address. Google can suspend profiles that use addresses where you don’t actually work. If you work from home and go to customers, hide your address and set service areas.

Copying the same town page five times. Swapping “Tring” for “Berkhamsted” in the same text doesn’t fool Google, and it doesn’t help customers either. Each page needs its own jobs, photos and local detail.

Forgetting the Bucks border. If you’re near Tring, a lot of your best work may be in Aylesbury, Wendover, Chesham and Amersham. Treat them as priority towns too.

What a realistic 30 day local SEO plan looks like

  • Week 1: fix your Google Business Profile categories, services and service areas.
  • Week 2: build your first two town pages, starting with the town you most want work from.
  • Week 3: ask your last ten happy customers for a review that mentions the job and town.
  • Week 4: add two more town pages and your first local job post.

Then keep going. Local SEO in Hertfordshire rewards the trades who keep at it month after month.

FAQ

How long does local SEO take in Hertfordshire?
Profile fixes can help within weeks. Town pages and reviews usually take two to four months to move you into the map pack.

Do I need an office in every town?
No. A service area business can rank in towns it serves, but you’ll rank most easily close to your address.

Is local SEO worth it for a one person business?
Usually more than for anyone. The map pack sends calls without paying per click.
